| Congress candidates don't want Rahul to address rallies in their constituencies | | Delhi Assembly polls | | Early Times Report
JAMMU, Nov 24: Believe it or not, but it is a fact that most of the Congress candidates seeking election to the Delhi Assembly do not want AICC vice-president, Sonia Gandhi's son and the Congress's prime ministerial candidate Rahul Gandhi to campaign in their respective constituencies believing that the unpopular Rahul Gandhi's forays in their areas will further mar their poll prospects. They reached this conclusion after Rahul Gandhi's rally in Delhi's Ambedkar Nagar on Sunday turned out to be a flop show because of poor turnout. Ever since then, the party candidates in other constituencies are speaking against holding any such rally in their respective areas in future. A report which emanated from Delhi only the other day clearly said that "the Congress candidates of Delhi are afraid that declining popularity of the party's vice president, which is apparent from poor turnout in most of the recent rallies attended by Rahul, would have an adverse impact on their poll prospects". Besides this, the report also said that the "candidates are relaxed due to the fact that party has not scheduled any other rally of Rahul Gandhi in the national capital in coming days". It needs to be underlined that on Sunday, when Rahul Gandhi started speaking, the entire crowd comprising just a couple of hundred people walked out. Earlier, Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit had to appeal to a section of the crowd which had gathered for the rally to stay back and listen to Rahul Gandhi. Some people were getting restless as they had gathered at the DDA ground to listen to the Congress leader since 10.30 a.m. Rahul Gandhi came around 2 p.m. and spoke a little later. Dakshinpuri, where the rally was organized is considered to be the Congress's stronghold and the poor and migrants are in majority in the constituency. |
