| PSLF organizes convention on ST status demand | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Nov 24: Jammu and Kashmir Pahari Speaking Lawyers Forum (PSLF) today organized a convention which deliberated upon the delay on the part of the Government in granting Schedule Tribe status to the pahari tribe of Rajouri, Poonch, Uri, Keran and Karnah. Advocate Zahid Sarfraz Malik president of the forum while speaking on the occasion said that pahari speaking tribe of the state are mainly concentrated in remote border areas and are put to considerable economic distress, as is evident from their backwardness in reference to socio-economic indices. He said Government of Jammu and Kashmir and Government of India have identified and recognized paharis as a tribe and the same can be cleared from the facts that the Government of Jammu and Kashmir way back vide Cabinet decision no. 159 dated 8-8-1989 identified and recommended the paharis, Gujjars, Bakerwals, Gaddi, Bazigar and Saniasi to be declared and notified as Scheduled Tribes, excluding paharis the others out of the same recommendation i.e.Gujjars, Bakerwals and Gaddis were declared as Scheduled Tribe by the Government of India in 1992. He further said that Governor of Jammu and Kashmir, General KV Krishna Rao had recommended the case of pahari speaking tribe for grant of Schedule Tribe Status vide recommendation letter dated 26th of December 1993.That the former Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir Farooq Abdullah vide letter dated 29th May 2001, again recommended the case of pahari speaking tribe for its declaration as Scheduled Tribe. Advocate Ashok Sharma while speaking on the occasion said that much more is required for the upliftment of this downtrodden sect of the society and appealed to the Government for early grant of ST status which is necessary for the improvement of quality of life and participation in promotion of the unexplored talent of the people of the community. |
