Semis line-up drawn in Sant Gurbaksh Hockey

JAMMU, Nov 30: Semifinals position has been cleared with the entry of Gurdaspur XI, Power House Poonch, Nanak Nagar Club and J&K Police XI in the last four stages of the Sant Gurbaksh Singh (Danna) Memorial Hockey Tournament underway at K K Hakhu Stadium, here today.
Now, in the semifinals, to be played tomorrow, Gurdaspur XI shall take on Nanak Nagar Club at 1.30 pm while Power House Club Poonch shall lock horns against formidable J&K Police XI at 3 pm.
Earlier, in the quarterfinals, played today, Gurdaspur XI trounced 157 Territorial Army (TA) by three goals to one. Amandeep Singh (12th), Lovejeet singh (20th) and Narinder Sharma (27th) were the scorers.
From TA, Darvinder Singh reduced the margin netting the ball in the 42nd minute. Earlier, TA missed a penalty stroke awarded in their favour in the 50th minute.
Meanwhile, in other quarterfinal, Power House Poonch blanked Singh Club Bandhu Rakh 3-0. Talwinder Pal Singh (seventh) and Pawan Kumar (22nd and 38th) were the scorers.
Today's matches officiated by the technical penal including Jagjeet Singh, Iqbal Singh, JS Reen, Charanjeet Singh, GS Bakshi, Joginder Singh, RS Bitta under the guidance of tournament director, MS Reen.
In today's quarterfinals, Member Legislative Assembly, Indu Pawar and Superintendent of Police, Doda, Tajinder Singh were special guests, who interacted with the teams and appreciated the organizers and the Hockey J&K.


Sports Council holds screening of Thang-Ta team

JAMMU, Nov 30: The J&K State Sports Council today held screening of the selected State Thang - Ta team heading for the 20th National Championship to be held at Imphal in Manipur from December 17 to December 20.
The screening was conducted by member Sports Council, Prof. Bashir Ahmad, Sports Officer (Kashmir), Haji Abdul Qayoom.
Meanwhile, the Association has decided to conduct a 15-day coaching camp before team's departure for the venue. The camp shall take place at Jammu, a handout issued here today.
KV Miran Sahib takes out awareness rally

JAMMU, Nov 30: Kendriya Vidyalaya (KV) Miran Sahib took out a rally in the BSF Campus to make the people aware of problems of adolescence like AIDS and drug abuse. Earlier, Bhartiya Lok Sangeet Kala Sansthan performed cultural programme for the awareness of the students. Resource persons from the Sansthan also guided the young students to right perspective in life.


J&K comfortably placed against Kerela in Ranji

JAMMU, Nov 30: Sailing on superb bowling performance from pacers, Samiullah Beigh and Ram Dayal, Jammu and Kashmir today bowled out Kerela to take a fine 75 runs first lead in the ongoing Ranji Trophy match at GGM Science College Hostel Ground, here.
While Samiullah clinched four wickets causing severe damage to the middle order, Ram Dayal supported him well at the other end taking away two wickets. Mohd Muddassir was equally good with two wickets.
Confidently placed J&K have already made it a 186 runs lead in their second innings with nine wickets remaining after hosts brought the score on board 111 runs for the loss of one wicket in 27 overs at the end of day-three play.
Adil Rishi was batting at 68 (off 80 balls, 9x4) runs with Bandeep Singh (13) at the other end when stumps were drawn. Wicket-keeper batsman, Owaid Haroon was the outgoing batsman who lost his wicket PU Anthaf at 24. Important to mention here that J&K played fast in their second innings adding runs at an average over four runs per over.
Earlier, Kerela resumed their innings from overnight score of 184 for two and bowled out for 302 runs in 114 overs in the post lunch session. Star striker, VA Tagadeesh, who was batting at 84, completed his century before he bowled out at a score of 106.
Inter-College symposium on Aids held
at Dogra College of Education

Bishnah, Nov 30: The NSS Unit of Dogra College of Education organised an Inter - Collegiate symposium on the occasion of WORLD AIDS DAY on 30th Nov 2013 in the College premises. The topic of the symposium was "AIDS- Myths and Realities" where in twenty six volunteers from various Colleges of Education participated. The function started with lighting of traditional lamp. Rajni Manhas, Programme Officer NSS Unit Dogra College of Education in her address expressed her concern over the fact that most of the people even among the educated masses are ignorant about HIV and are believed to contribute unknowingly in its spread considerably. She further added that awareness is the only way to combat this problem. Shefali Sharma, Vice Principal, DCE exhorted the students to spread the message and also stressed on the need for organizing more such meaningful programmes.
Kr. Samar Dev Singh Charak, Secretary, Dogra Educational Trust, Prof B D Damral Director cum Principal Dogra College of Education, Bela Thakur, Academic coordinator, DCE were also present on the occasion. Prof. Damral highlighted that HIV is highly stigmatized in India and much needs to be done at macro level. He stressed upon the students to educate the masses and to adopt preventive measures against AIDS.
The members of the Jury included S L Kotwal, Principal DIETT and Indu Puri, Sr Lect. Dogra College of Education. Phulvarsha from Dogra College of Education was adjudged 01st while Ginny from J K College of Education was declared 02nd and Mohika Bakshi from Dogra College of Education was ranked 03rd . However the 1st Consolation Prize was bagged by Geeta Devi from Dogra College of Education, 2nd Consolation Prize was won by Deepika Saini from Dogra College of Education. All the winners were accordingly awarded with the Prizes and Momentoes.
The programme concluded with the Vote of Thanks which was moved by Sumer Singh Sambyal, Senior Lecturer, Dogra College of Education.


St Peter School's Annual Day festivities concludes

Jammu, Nov 30: St. Peter's School BC Road, Jammu on Saturday concluded its' two day long annual day function.
Deputy Chief Minister Tara Chand was the chief guest on the occasion while Devender Singh Rana NC, Provincial President of India was the guest of honor.
The audience was enthralled by the culture items performed by students of primary class.
The rich cultural heritage of J&K was depicted in various colourful dances and drama items presented by the young buds of the school. The school principal Rev. Fr. J. Stalin Raj presented the welcome address for the high school. Sr. Jenny Augustine for the primary wing and the Sr. Edwina for the junior wing. The school annual report was shown on power Point Presentation in which the growth of the school both in terms of the student and mentor strengths as well as the growth of infrastructure was shown.

8 National School Games
J&K boys reach quarterfinals of Basketball

JAMMU, Nov 30: Jammu and Kashmir boys (under-19) made it to the quarterfinals of the under National School Games in Basketball being organised under the banner of School Games Federation of India (SGFI) at Bathinda, Punjab.
Earlier, in the opening group match J&K boys lost to Karnataka 30-38 only to emerge winner in other two engagements against Uttrakhand and Uttar Pradesh.
As per the reports reaching here, J&K beat Uttrakhand 38-17 and outplayed Uttar Pradesh 56-42 to qualify for the knock-out stages of quarterfinals. J&K boys have been widely hailed for their all-round performance in defence and offence.
Jaskirat Singh, Amanjot Singh, Rohin Kundal and Sumer Singh, all trainees of the SAI day-boarding scheme at MA stadium, put up brilliant performances to make a mark at the national scene.

National Rafting C’ship gets underway

REASI, 30: Chenab Challenge: the National Rafting Championship is the first adventure sports and National Rafting event that is being held on River Chenab. The three day event began on November 29 with the registration of teams, issuance of Id cards and briefing and prologue. The event is being organized by Tourism Department in collaboration with District Administration Reasi. The event includes Marathon and Sprint events among various teams.
The Marathon event was flagged off today from Reasi-Bridge by District Development Commiss ioner Reasi, Dr Shahid Iqbal Choudhary and Director Tourism, Jammu, Soujanya Kumar Sharma. The event will culminate at Dera Banda Bahadur.
In this event about nine teams are participating and each team has eight players besides two rescue teams.
Speaking on the occasion, Soujanay Kumar Sharma said " the motive of such events is to promote adventure potential of Reasi and also in this event large number of adventure sport persons and sport lovers are visiting the area which would boost local economy and develop infrastructure. He added that tourism is one of the fast growing sector in the country and people must come forward particularly unemployed youth to avail benefits of various schemes and opt tourism sector as a carrier prospective.
DDC Reasi informed that district administration is soon going to construct Adventure Sports Club and also a Society of District Officers is being Constituted for promoting rafting. He said that a tourist hut and café will be constructed on banks of Chenab to strengthen sports club'. Such events in the area are going to help in diverting maximum tourists visiting to Shri Mata Vaishno Devi and Shiv Khori to this area and such events are going to be organised regularly inviting maximum domestic as well as foreign tourists in the coming days, he added.
The technical support for the event was provided by Sanjay Singh Sambyal, renowned rafter of Jammu and Kashmir.

KC Gurukul Public School Paloura excels Inter-School English Debate Competition

JAMMU, Nov 30: Inter-School English Debate Competition was conducted in a befitting manner within the school campus. Total eight public schools namely G, D Goenka, KC Public, KC International, BSF Paloura, JK Public and Jodhamal, Banyan International Public including the host school, took part in this mega event .The principal of KC Gurukul school Dr B R Dogra extended warm welcome to all the participants and the dignitaries as well and it was followed by a welcome Hindi song presented by the school choir group. The entire debate was focused on the theme:"Why the society prefers boys over girls in general?" and each team was evaluated on the basis of vital competencies which are inevitable for choosing the best speakers. The entire episode was evaluated by two eminent judges: Dr. Ranjodh Jamwal and Madam Vidushi Bakshi.
Tarun Sharma of KC Gurukul Public School Paloura School was declared the winner of this debate and the second position was bestowed by Sheikh Snober of Jodhamal Public School. The third place was shared by Archita Tandon of KC Iternational school and Irrha Sheikh of the host school.
Over all Trophy was awarded to KC Gurukul Public School Paloura. The remaining school participants were also given the merit certificates .The prize distribution ceremony was presided over by the worthy chairman of the host school Arvind Mahajan together with Madam Vijay Puri (Academic Director) and they appreciated the public speaking traits of all the participants .He also lauded the efforts of the teachers those who worked behind the scenes tirelessly in preparing the promising scholars so well. Indeed, his main objective to host such a memorable programme was to promote spirit of fellowship amongst the CBSE schools in and around Jammu, besides achieving excellence in all the spheres of education.


Sports Council holds boxing camp at Srinagar

JAMMU, Nov 30: To expose the promising Valley boys to the world of boxing, J&K State Sports conducted a week-long special coaching camp at Indoor Complex, Bakshi Stadium, Srinagar.
The camp held under the overall supervision of technical experts, Sports Officer (J), Rajan Sharma and boxing coach, Mushtaq Ahmed.
"Around 50 young men turned up in this camp and sharpened the skills under the guidance of experts in the game. We have short-listed 15 promising boys for advance coaching camp to be held either in Jammu or in district Poonch in near future," Sports Officer (J), Rajan Sharma said.
He further said that there was lot of enthusiasm among the boys for the game of boxing and hopefully a good number of boys are expected to adopt boxing as regular sports in their life.
