Gujjar, Bakerwals, Pahari speaking community hold joint meeting

Rajouri, Jan 2 : The leaders of Gujjar, Bakerwals and Pahari speaking community of Rajouri district today held a joint meeting to ease the tension and work for better relations, unity and brotherhood among the members of both the communities.
Shahbaz Khan executive chairman JK Pahari People Movement (JKPPM) said that more trouble started when in 1974 during her visit to JK the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi had sanctioned Rs 12 crores for the development of Gujjar and Bakerwal community which was followed by additional development funds provided to this community by the then Chief Minister Sheikh Abdullah in 1975.
Both the communities sharing the same culture, inhabitation, traditions and living together for the last many centuries Poverty, illiteracy, economic backwardness, suppression, atrocities are some other common things which both the communities sharing together. But Gujjar and Bakerwal community has been enjoying benefits under the Scheduled Tribe status while Pahari community struggling for it for the last more than 30 years.
Pahari speaking community leaders said that some influential politicians from other community have created obstacles in getting ST Status for their community for their vested interests when their (Pahri Community) was on number one in the list sent by State government in 1989 to the Union government for granting Schedule Tribes (ST) Status to some communities in J&K. "But our demand for the ST status was still pending with the Union government and leaders have decided to boycott all those parties in the forthcoming Parliament and Assembly elections those will oppose ST status for us before these elections" said Shabaz.
