| For second day running SMC clears snow, dewaters Srinagar areas | | | Jehangir Rashid
SRINAGAR, Jan 1 : For the second day running men and machinery of Srinagar Municipal Corporation was pressed into service in order to clear snow from roads, lanes and by-lanes of the Srinagar district. The Corporation has also put into service dozens of dewatering pumps in order to prevent submerging areas of Srinagar city. Following heavy snowfall on Tuesday the SMC pressed men and machinery to remove snow from the areas where snow had accumulated causing people to move around. The operation continued on Wednesday as well and all out efforts were made to clear snow from the different areas of the summer capital of the state. SMC Media Relations Officer, Masrat Yusuf in a press release said that early in the morning men and machinery was pressed to clear key roads in the city in the wake of the snowfall that was recorded on Tuesday. Masrat said that snow clearance ensured smooth traffic towards important destinations and installations like hospitals, ration depots, banks, offices and religious places, with special focus on areas like Jamia Masjid and Hazratbal. "The snow clearance which was started on a war footing was supervised by SMC Commissioner Dr G N Qasba, who conducted personal tours of uptown and downtown areas on Tuesday to instruct the ground staff and pass orders. Senior officials including Joint Commissioner (Administration) Bashir Ahmad Khan, Chief Sanitation Officer Hakim Ejaz and ward officers worked in close coordination to clear snow from the city centres and interior areas," said Masrat in the statement. The SMC Media Relations Officer said that more than 2700 sanitary workers, 72 dewatering pumps, 20 loaders, four JCBs, two robots and several hoppers were pressed into service since Tuesday morning to ensure that common masses face no inconvenience. She said that 64 HP caterpillar machine was also forced into action to speed up snow clearance adding that SMC would try its best to come up to the expectations of people. "The SMC has set up a control room. People can call on 0194-2474499 and 0194-2450620 to register their complaints. Twenty one complaints were registered by the SMC during the day and the same were addressed swiftly. Besides, a Facebook page has been created under the name "SMC Information and Public Relations", for registering grievances and information," said Masrat. It would be in place to mention here that SMC is mandated to clear snow from roads, lanes and by-lanes within the municipal limits of Srinagar city. Snow clearance from important roads in the Srinagar city along with the other roads in the rest of districts is done by Mechanical Engineering department. |
