Jammu, Jan 11 : Traffic on the Jammu-Udhampur section of the National highway remained disrupted for over two hours on Saturday morning following spontaneous protests which broke out to raise voice against the manhandling of an auto driver by a traffic cop. The traffic on the busy route remained disrupted between 0930hrs to 1200 hrs and was restored only after senior traffic police officers reached the spot and pacified the protesting people assuring strict action against the guilty cop.
According to eye witness, the trouble started soon after an auto driver, ferrying vegetables from local vegetable market to Dansal area, was directed by the traffic cop at Bantalab naka point to stop for routine verification of papers. The auto driver, who identified himself as Gafoor Khan, alleged that the traffic cop demanded Rs 100 from him and when he refused to oblige him. the traffic cop thrashed him.
"The auto driver, who felt humiliated, instantly decided to take revenge and instead of moving further he decided to park his auto in the middle of the busy road and forced the moving traffic to come to a halt, eyewitnesses added. Several local villagers and passersby also assembled around him and shouted slogans against the traffic cops.
Before Nagrota police swung in to action the highway started witnessing long traffic jams forcing the senior traffic police officers to also rush to the spot to diffuse the tension in the area. On the arrival of SSP Traffic Pawan Parihar the junior police and traffic cops were able to pacify the local residents to lift the dharna.
The people were demanding suspension of the traffic cop involved in the beating of auto driver Gafoor Khan. SSP Pawan Parihar also directed the DTI Traffic to identify the traffic cop who allegedly was involved in the beating of auto driver. He, later suspended the ASI namely Dara Singh and changed the entire staff posted at Nagrota. He asked the driver to desist the practice corruption.
The dharna was later lifted by the protesting people around 12.00 pm paving the way for smooth movement of traffic on the highway.
