JAMMU, Jan 29: The Department of Cardiology, Government Medical College and Hospital (GMC&H), Jammu initiated a day long workshop in complex PCI in association with Dr Kan Zen from Japan. This is a third of its kind of workshop being conducted in the department.
"The workshop is an initiation of activities to keep abreast with the latest in international trends in Cardiology," according to Dr Sushil K Sharma, Head of Department.
He said the Cardiology Department of the GMC Jammu is equipped with entire infrastructure to provide world class treatment to patients of the region. Being a teaching institution it further helps us to share knowledge and technologies with international experts. During the workshop many complex coronary angioplasties will be performed.
Coronary artery disease is commonly known as blockage of arteries of heart. These arteries supply blood to the heart muscle. Any obstruction in the blood supply of heart muscle leads to condition known as heart attack, which can be in the form of Angina /STEMI or non-STEMI.
Dr Sharma said the common symptoms of such obstruction are chest pain which is heavy constricting, difficulty in breathing at rest or during physical exertion and excessive sweating. The common risk factors of coronary artery disease are diabetes, hypertension, abnormal lipids, smoking, obesity, physical inactivity and stress which can be modified the other factors that cannot be controlled are family history, genetic and age.
"Today we have techniques to cure most of the blockages without an operation," Dr Sharma said, adding that a branch of cardiology that deals with such minimally invasive technology, known as Interventional Cardiology.
Dr Kan Zen, an expert in the field of Interventional Cardiology from Omihachiman Community Centre, Japan. Dr Kan Zen is one of the large volume operators in Japan and is expert in Chronic Total Occlusion. He has chosen the GMC centre in India to do a daylong workshop that itself is heart-warming for patients of complex coronary artery disease in this region.
"My attempt is to see that most patients are benefitted in this region by such techniques," Dr Sharma added. |
