| Enforcement of AFSPA the fall-out of secessionist violence | | Kashmir a den of anti-India intrigues | | Neha JAMMU, Jan 29: The out-on-the-limb and unpopular All-Party Hurriyat Conference of fanatic, selfish, dictatorial and canny Mirwaiz Umar Farooq on Tuesday denounced the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA) that gives a legal immunity to the armed forces involved in anti-insurgency operations in the militant and separatist-infested Kashmir valley and other areas of the state and said that the affairs in the state are run by security forces. It also appealed to the international community to raise its voice against the alleged excesses being committed on people by the security forces and urged the people of the Valley to show complete association with the ongoing struggle. It is absolutely wrong that the affairs of the state are run by the security forces. The security forces are only discharging their obligations towards the people and the state by taking on the separatists and terrorists and making supreme sacrifices in the process. Indeed, the charges leveled by outfits like APHC (M) are communally motivated and have no basis whatsoever. Similarly, that their movement is sectarian and unpopular can be seen from the appeal the APHC (M) made to the Kashmiris that they should join the ongoing secessionist movement. That it had to make an appeal even after 25 years of the secessionist movement is a clear proof that the common people in the Valley have nothing to do with the movement and that they want to live in peace. Any way, what the APHC (M) said about the AFSPA was what all the Kashmir-based outfits, including the ruling National Conference (NC), had been saying since years. The fact of the matter is that Kashmiri leaders of all hues, including those at the helm of affairs, are one as far as their stand on the AFSPA is concerned. They want this Act to go because they want the rise of a situation in the Kashmir valley that helps the secessionist and communal forces achieve their age-old objective: Separation of the state from India in general and Kashmir valley in particular. It was this urge of the separatist, communal and pro-Pakistan and pro-independence forces in the Valley that left the authorities with no other option but to invoke the provisions of the AFSPA. Interestingly, it was the Kashmiri ruling elite that paved the way for the invocation of the AFSPA years ago, as the situation in the Kashmir valley and other parts of the state had gone out of the hand and the extremists had created a situation that not only forced the minority community to quit Kashmir but also endangered national security. Not just this, the extremists backed to the hilt by Pakistan and mercenaries had again and again bloodied and convulsed the state's political scene to cause fear psychosis among the minority communities and deter pro-India Kashmiri Muslims. The enforcement of the AFSPA in the state has to be viewed in this context. If the APHC (M) and similar other outfits want the authorities to withdraw the AFSPA and similar other legislations, they have to eschew violence and join the mainstream politics. They should remember that New Delhi will never allow secession of Kashmir or another communal partition of India. Gone are the days when the Congress would barter the national interests to pander to communal forces in the Valley and other parts of India. |
