As people protest in favour of administrative units, masses suffer after being kept hostage
District officials prefer to stay away from protesters

SRINAGAR, Jan 29: Creation of new administrative units in the state may or may not lead to the ouster of Omar Abdullah as Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir but these have already created problems for the people who have to visit various parts of Kashmir valley.
As people in South, Central and North Kashmir are up in arms with regards to formation of new administrative units, people who travel in connection with their duties suffer badly. The office goers have to change their vehicles and as such lot of their time get wasted in boarding and de-boarding the vehicles.
Sources said that district administration officials are found wanting when it comes to satiating demands of people who are on confrontationist path with the State Government. The indifferent attitude of the State Government gives an impression that there is no Government on the ground with free for all.
It would be in place to mention here that residents of Litter, Kakapora and Newa in South Kashmir's Pulwama district are up in arms while demanding Tehsil status for their respective villages. Similarly people in Central Kashmir's Narbal area are also demanding tehsil status with protests on similar lines also going on in North Kashmir's areas of Ajas and Watergam.
"People may be right in demanding for new administrative units in their areas, but that does not mean that they would make the masses hostage. Everybody has a right to protest but not at the cost of causing trouble to others. At the same time the district administration should step in and ensure that there are minimum difficulties while heading towards their respective destinations," said sources.
Sources further said that instead of being proactive the district administration officials confine themselves to the cozy comfort of their offices and do not bother to come out. They said that inaction from the State Government provides a boost to the protesters and they keep the office goers and patients hostage for hours together.
"People who travel from Srinagar to South Kashmir and vice-versa have to change their vehicles due to the protests at many places. As such they have to pay more and lot of time gets wasted due to frequent changing of vehicles. The vehicle owners dictate terms to the commuters with the latter being forced to accept the dictation," said sources.
The formation of newly administrative units has already snowballed into major crisis with both National Conference and Congress at loggerheads against each other. While National Conference wants Mushtaq Ganai Committee report to be implemented Congress on the other hand opines that Jammu division has not been given due share in the report.
Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah has already said that he would prefer to quit if he is not allowed to form new administrative units in the state. Political observers feel that this is a political gimmick with Omar playing to the galleries. They say that since Omar did not resign after more than 120 people were killed in 2010 in firing of police and security forces, how he can resign on the formation of newly formed administrative units in the state.
