| Urges one lakh labourers to open accounts in JK Bank | | Bizarre diktat of Labour Department | | Arun Singh
Jammu, Jan 29: The insensitive attitude of State Labour Department towards labour class can be gauged from the fact that, it has asked the labourers registered under Building and Others Construction Welfare Board to get their bank account opened with only Jammu and Kashmir Bank to get any financial benefits under various schemes, putting more than one lakh labourers at the receiving end. Sources told Early Times that the Labour Department has not been accepting the bank accounts of labourers from other Banks other than JK Bank for the last three months and stopped issuing their cheques under various schemes like Education assistance, Marriage assistance etc and strictly asked the laborers to open their bank accounts with JK Bank to avail any financial benefits. "Department is doing this without issuing any official order violating set norms and has out rightly rejected to entertain any case who is not having account with JK Bank by forcing its decision on labouerers putting more financial burden for opening new account as it takes minimum Rs 1000 for opening new account," they said further adding that even the decision of opening account in JK Bank has not been taken by the Board set up for redressing labourers issues. With this arbitrary step of Labour Department, more than one lakh labourers are at receiving end, they said. Even Labour Department has stopped registration of any new labourer under Building and Others Construction Welfare Board who is not having his/her bank account in JK Bank in violation of Reserve Bank of India (RBI) guidelines, sources said. "Maximum labourers come from rural areas and are having bank accounts in various banks running in these rural areas but with this decision they will have to go to urban areas where JK Banks branch are functioning," they said. Interestingly, they further mentioned that the financial assistance under various schemes for labourers have been high jacked by the political leaders despite having no role of them in it. "These political leaders take cheques of their constituencies from Labour Department and distribute them in public meeting to get political mileage," they said. |
