| BJP, NPP, JM stage walkout on desiltation of Ranbir canal | | | Bashir Assad
Jammu, Feb23; In protest against the government's failure to undertake desiltation of Rambir Canal, opposition BJP, JKNPP and JSM MLAs Sunday staged a walkout from the Assembly. As soon as the House met here today for transaction of business, members of BJP, Jammu & Kashmir National Panthers Party (JKNPP) and Jammu State Morcha (JSM) stood up and started shouting slogans against the government seeking immediate restoration of water supply in Ranbir Canal. JSM MLA, Ashwani Kumar, Yashpal Kundal of JKNPP and BJP members trooped into well of the House demanding reply from the government over the issue. They alleged that Ranbir Canal was closed on January 25 for desiltation. But the government has failed to undertake desilting leading to suspension of water supply for irrigation. Though PHE, Irrigation and Flood Control Minister Sham Lal Sharma while responding to the matter said desiltation work was awaiting funds from the Planning Department, and as soon as "funds pour in the operation will be started and water supply restored", the protesting MLAs not satisfied by the reply raised slogans against the government. Again it was Planning Minister Ajay Sadhotra who intervened and said funds would be released soon for the work. Not satisfied by the reply the opposition members staged walk out from the house demanding urgent undertaking of desilting of Rambir Canal. Simultaneously Balwant Singh Mankotia of Panthers Party staged a walkout from the Assembly in protest against "the central government's failure to grant a medical college for the Udhampur district". |
