| Jammu has less BPL population than Kashmir | | Members refute Economic survey projections | | Early Times Report Jammu, Feb 23: The below poverty line (BPL) population in Jammu region has been projected to be less as compared to that of Kashmir region, despite the fact that four out of seven poorest districts in the state fall in Jammu province. As per the economic survey report of 2013-14, released by Jammu and Kashmir government few days back in both houses of state legislature, it has been observed that there are 24.21 lakh BPL people with a dispersion of 22 lakh living in rural areas and 2.21 lakh living in urban areas. The same report read that Kishtwar, Poonch, Reasi and Ramban districts of Jammu region are among the poorest districts along Kupwara and Bandipora of Kashmir region and Kargil of Ladakh region. The total number of BPL population in these districts is more than 35 percent. But when the economic survey reports gave the data of Kashmir and Jammu region separately, it has been observed that 12.91 lakh BPL people are living in Kashmir region and 10.59 lakh people are living in Jammu region. There is a difference of more than two lakh BPL population between Kashmir and Jammu regions. The total area of Jammu region is 26293 square kilometre whereas Kashmir valley's area is 15948 square kilometre and out of 10 districts of Jammu region, people in eight districts are living in far flung areas where road connectivity and other important things are still a distant dream. Whereas in Kashmir valley, only two to three districts are having population which live in far flung hilly areas and other areas enjoy benefits of road connectivity to water, electricity and others. Despite that the economic survey report has suggested that BPL families are more in Kashmir region than that of Jammu region. "These figures seem incorrect. How come a difference of more than two lakh BPL population could arise between Kashmir and Jammu regions as poverty in Jammu region is more as compared to Kashmir region?," questioned an opposition leader in legislative Assembly. |
