| In Jammu, fight is between integrationists, fake secularists | | General election | | Rustam JAMMU, Mar 29: The battle lines in Jammu province are clearly drawn. The main political players in the region are four - the BJP, Congress, NC and JKNPP. The Congress and the NC are on the one side, and the BJP and the JKNPP on the other, notwithstanding the fact that these two organizations are fighting against each other as well as against the Congress-NC combine. The Congress and the NC are coalition partners. The Congress is contesting the Lok Sabha election in Jammu and the NC in Kashmir. Ever since the Election Commission of India announced the election schedule, the Congress and the NC have been carrying on a relentless campaign against their political rivals in their desperate bid to polarize the electorate by dubbing the BJP as a divisive and communal organization and claiming and reclaiming that they are secular and that they alone could provide an efficient administration and lead the people aright. Infact, all the Congress and the NC leaders who have been campaigning for the Congress candidates in Jammu province have been making identical or nearly identical statements. None of their statements focus on the developmental issues or issues of governance. Each one of them has been urging the people to defeat the "communal" and "divisive" BJP and elect "secular" Congress candidates. As for the BJP and the JKNPP, which are also pitted against each other in both the Lok Sabha constituencies in Jammu province, they are attacking the Congress and the NC and charging them with neglecting the people of this province, creating problems for the country in the state, indulging in communalism, promoting corruption and militancy and damaging the national cause. Interestingly, neither the BJP nor the JKNPP has been speaking anything about the PDP, which is also testing political waters in both the Parliamentary constituencies in Jammu province. It is also very interesting to note that while the BJP has till date not spoken a single word against the JKNPP, the JKNPP has been targeting not just the Congress and the NC but also the BJP. Significantly, the PDP has also not been attacking the BJP and the JKNPP. The PDP, like BJP and JKNPP, has been only attacking the NC and the Congress. The most important aspect of the whole situation in Jammu province is that while both the BJP and the JKNPP have been raking up people and nation-centric issues, the Congress and the NC have been trying their best to convert the ongoing electoral exercise into a struggle between secularists and communalists like the Congress and similar other outfits have been doing to polarize the society for votes in the rest of the country. To be more precise, the election scene in Jammu province is similar to that of the rest of the country. |
