| Militants target police, army in South, North Kashmir; Cop injured, IED defused | | Stone pelter attacks police party in Baramulla, injures 2 cops | | Jehangir Rashid SRINAGAR, Mar 29: Barely 24 hours after carrying out attacks in Kathua district militants carried out separate attacks in South and North Kashmir leading to injuries to a police cop. At the same time an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) was defused in the Bemina area of summer capital early in the morning. Reports said that a police cop got injured after militants attacked a police party in the Kakapora area of South Kashmir's Pulwama district. The police cop was part of the heavy deployment of police that was posted in the area since People’s Democratic Party (PDP) President, Mehbooba Mufti was in the town addressing election rallies. The incident occurred at around 5 PM with police and security forces returning the firing of militants, however, the militants managed to flee. It has been learnt that one of the militants carrying a pistol fired upon the police cop thus injuring him. The injured cop was identified as Javid Iqbal of IRP 18th Bn. He was immediately referred to district hospital Pulwama for treatment where his condition is said to be stable. After the incident security forces and Special Operation Group (SOG) of police cordoned off the Kakapora area and its adjoining areas to track down the militants. However, no one has been arrested so far. Earlier, in the day a group of gunmen fired upon the Road Opening Party (ROP) of Army at Palhalan in the Pattan area of North Kashmir's Baramulla district. However, no one was injured in the firing incident while as militants left behind a rifle. Army recovered one AK-47 Rifle, along with magazine and ammunition. A Defence spokesman said that at about 8:30 AM some unidentified gunmen fired upon the ROP of the Army near New Colony, Palhalan, Pattan. The spokesman said that army troops did not fire back to avoid collateral damage as this being a residential area. However, the troops cordoned the suspected area and carried out search. "Reinforcements were rushed to the incident site to beef up the strength. During the search, forces recovered one AK-47 Rifle, along with one magazine and nine rounds of AK ammunition hidden under a pile of woods. No injury has been reported to any one and the search operations are still continuing till the last report came in," said the spokesman. In the meantime a police party deputed to arrest a notorious stone pelter came under the attack of the stone pelter leading to injuries to police cop. A police spokesman said that the stone pelter identified as Nadeem Ahmad resident of Old Town Baramulla attacked the police party when they tried to arrest him from Sabzi Mandi, Baramulla. The police spokesman said the stone pelter attacked the police party with an Iron Weight injuring two constables. One of them was seriously injured and has been referred to SKIMS Soura for further treatment. In the morning Army averted a major tragedy by timely detecting and defusing an IED in Bemina area of Srinagar. A Defence spokesman said that at 7:30 AM the Road Opening Party of Army discovered a suspicious looking object looking like an IED disguised in a pressure cooker in the Bemina area here. "Troops immediately alerted nearby police station and the Bomb Disposal team. The area was cordoned off jointly by the Army and JKP personnels to ensure safety of people. Subsequently the IED was neutralized by the Bomb Disposal team of JK Police," said the Defence spokesman. |
