| DB seeks SMC response on disposal of dead animals | | | Early Times Report Srinagar, Apr 24: A Division Bench of Jammu and Kashmir High Court has directed Srinagar Municipal Corporation to file response regarding disposal of dead animals at Achan dumping site in Srinagar. Hearing a Public Interest Litigation, the Division Bench Comprising Justice Mohammad Yaqoob Mir and Hasnain Massodi passed the direction after hearing advocate Z. A. Qureshi, representing residents of the Achan. In his submissions, advocate Z A Qureshi highlighted that the situation at landfill site has not undergone change. He produced certain photographs, and after seeing them, the bench observed the photographs suggest that the position prevalent on spot is "horrible". "Dead animals are shown lying scattered at the dumping site," the bench said, asking the Municipality to file response in light of the photographs. In the response, the Division Bench said SMC shall indicate as to what steps have been taken for the disposal of the dead animals as are shown scattered there at the dumping site in photographs and shall also indicate the area which has been earmarked for taking care of these dead animals by the Municipality. The Bench also directed Registrar Judicial to file its report on conducting spot inspection of the Achan. The Bench posted the case for further consideration onMay 1. On last date of hearing, the division bench had directed Registrar Judicial (Srinagar wing) to visit garbage dumping site and submit report indicating among other things whether or not any leachate remains untreated at the spot. "It needs to be examined whether all leachate generated passes through three Leachate Treatment Plants or some of it still finds its way to underground water," the division bench had said. |
