| `Low turnout dangerous for democracy' | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Apr 24: The low voting percentage in Anantnag parliamentary constituency in general and in Pulwama district in particular is very dangerous trend being setup in Kashmir valley, which is trying to come out of the violence phase of 25 years. It is a known fact that reason behind low turnout in Pulwama district of south Kashmir is the recent killings of Sarpanches and the posters put up on the name of Hizbul Mujahideen cautioning people against voting. But people must understand this fact that since 1987 when elections were rigged by then ruling party and followed by low turnout in almost every Assembly or Parliamentary elections here benefitted only one party. Not coming out to vote will give this party another chance to play with the emotions and future of the state, which is in need of a Government who can mitigate their problems. The low turnout this time again may benefit the ruling National Conference (NC) and loss will be of people, not only of Anantnag constituency, but of entire state, consequences of which will be visible in entire country. As common man has decided to stay back and not cast his vote, which is clear trend that goons of a particular party will come out and vote in huge numbers without getting caught. The low turnout is also a win-win situation for a particular separatist group which has been advocating and calling for poll boycott and the present Government will not care as what happens to state in future if the same trend continues. As two more phases of Lok Sabha election for Kashmir valley are left and will go for poll on April 30 and May 7, people must come out in huge number to vote so that real people with real mandate come forward and represent people. |
