| Has Congress ditched its coalition partner? | | NC morale low after Anantnag polling | | Shakeel A Khan SRINAGAR, Apr 25: Following the polling on Thursday (April 24) for Anantnag Lok Sabha seat the morale of National Conference is very low. National Conference-Congress coalition candidate for this seat Dr. Mehboob Beigh was quite upset at the end of the voting. Dr. Beigh's statement at the end of the day aptly proved that he has accepted defeat and is looking for reasons. The NC-Congress coalition candidate said that majority of the people stayed away from the polling as they are associated with the 'freedom movement'. Till yesterday NC did not accept the PDP's claim that poll boycott helps National Conference. But sensing its defeat in Parliamentary elections in South Kashmir, National Conference has started to make these statements, much to the disbelief of the party workers. In Mehboob Beigh's own words on April 24, "Whether you like it or not but it is a fact that the freedom movement is going on. Separatists had called for the poll boycott and most of the people responded to it.'' National Conference is the same party which claimed that separatists more so Hurriyat Conference does not enjoy the public support. What has compelled Dr. Beigh to issue such a statement which could prove disastrous for the party? Moreover it can prove fatal for the party in the elections for Srinagar and Baramulla Lok Sabha seats that are going to polls shortly. "Dr. Beigh's statement clearly indicates that National Conference has accepted defeat even before the counting of the votes. This is for sure to help the cause of PDP in the next two phases of Parliamentary elections and in the coming Assembly elections also," said some people while sharing their ideas with Early Times. National Conference may lose the North Kashmir's Parliamentary seat as well because pre-election atmosphere has generated a lot of heat in favor of PDP. It is the testimony to the fact that people want a change this time. And also, National Conference is lacking the practical support of Congress. If sources are to be believed then Congress has stabbed in the back of National Conference as PDP enjoyed the support of the 'hand'. Some experts are of the opinion that the way PDP got patting from the Congress strongholds, makes it clear that NC will miss the support of its coalition partner on ground. Some of the experts support their arguments by quoting Ghulam Nabi Azad's speech at an election rally in South Kashmir. "This time I have come to request you to vote for Mehboob Beigh, but in the coming Assembly elections, I will seek your votes for Congress only." PDP is riding on a wave these days and has handled the difficult situation 'boldly'. On the other hand Congress is spoiling efforts of National Conference. Given these developments one can conclude that Jammu and Kashmir is going to register a big change on the political front. |
