| Over 300,000 house holds using power sans permission: PDD | | Govt to install more 4 lakh meters to meet demands | | Early Times Report
Srinagar, Apr 29 : As the power scenario in the state is worsening after every day with the people spending much of their time in darkness, the Power Development Department (PDD) has issued the tender for procurement of four lakh meters for the people here. According to the details received by KNS, PDD while proving reason behind the move stated that the installation of the meters is done to increase the revenue and meet out the deficit. Also the PDD stated that the move will put a lid over all the illegal connections being used at present without the knowledge of the department. The details maintained that presently the PDD has installed more than eight lakh meters in the state with 374834 meters installed in Jammu region and 324542 meters in valley. In 2006- the quantity of the meters was one lakh and fifty thousand and the same witnessed the increase of more than five lakh and fifty thousand in five years. According to the 2011 census, the state has 20, 150,88 households but the figures available with the PDD reveal that only 14,906,96 are registered with the PDD while as there are more than two lakh fifty thousand households that avail electricity illegally. Authorities also stated that the installation of the meters could make the people to register their electricity connections and also the same shall decrease the power losses. The department continues to remain under criticism for failing to provide adequate power supply to its consumers. The power supply has always remained a political issue in the state with the politicians during every election promising voters more brighter days ahead. |
