| Tourism deptt indifferent to Jammu's historic monuments | | | Arun Singh JAMMU, Apr 29: Tourism Department has never been serious to preserve historical monuments in Jammu province. The extent of its lackadaisical attitude can be gauged from the fact that after initiating the preservation work of historical Samba Fort, the work was stopped for want of funds. Sources told Early Times that Samba Fort is also facing the similar fate that of Mubarak Mandi Complex as the work is still incomplete even after the lapse of more than six years. They said that the project for restoration and conservation of Samba fort was sanctioned in 2011-12 under State Plan at a cost of Rs 4.94 crore on the basis of a Detailed Project Report (DPR) approved by the State Government. The objective of the restoring the fort was to make it a tourist attraction in Jammu province and to showcase J&K's rich and diverse heritage and cater to multifarious interests of visitors coming to the State, they said. They further informed that after incurring an expenditure of Rs 75 lakh during the year 2011-12 on part works, the execution of the project was stopped for want of further funds. "The work for restoration and conservation of Samba fort was stopped as the funds for balance work were not provided by the State Government," they added. Sources said that the project was taken up without knowing the availability of adequate of funds which resulted in work stoppage of work in midway as the fort had neither been completely restored or renovated nor put to adaptive re-use and funds used resulted in unfruitful expenditure of Rs 75 lakh. Pertinently this conservation project was envisaged for the restoration of rampart, view points, restoration of water tank, royal residence besides up-gradation of pathways, landscaping and installation of spotlights in and outside of the fort. |
