| JK still has more gender gap in literacy than national level | | | Early Times Report Srinagar, Apr 29 : With the Gender Gap in Literacy (GGL) showing a major decrease across India, in Jammu and Kashmir- the cause of concern is that the trend has increased manifold since last four decades. According to the details available , the gender gap in literacy has been drastically decreasing at the All India level from 25.06 percent in 1961 to 21.59 percent in 2001 and further to 16.68 percent in 2011. In Jammu and Kashmir, contrary to the percentage at the All India level, the gender gap in literacy is increasing. In 1961- it was 12.71 percent and it reached 23.60 percent in 2001. The reports informed that the gender gap in literacy is more visible in rural areas if the state as compared to the urban ones. The authorities while providing reasons behind the issue stated that the problem can be attributed to several factors like social dogmas, engagement of the girl child in agricultural and other domestic activities. It was stated further that the government is making all efforts to decrease the gender gap in literacy and that various departments have put their heads together so that the objective could be achieved. |
