JAMMU, Apr 29 : In the backdrop of increasing smuggling of bovine animals from different parts of Jammu region as well as neighboring states of Punjab and HP , various social and religious organisations have demanded a blanket ban on the sale of bovines in the State. Sources said concerned over the increasing bovine smuggling in the Jammu, region State VHP and Bajrang Dal have warned to launch a movement in case immediate steps were not taken to check this menace."The Government has failed to check the smuggling of bovine animals" said the VHP patron in-chief Dr Rama Kant Dubey. "The VHP is left with no alternative but launch an agitation against the menace along with the support of various other organizations", he added. He said the bovines from Punjab and HP are also smuggled via Jammu to Kashmir Valley. He said it being a sensitive issue, the Government was supposed to curb the menace by making stringent laws which it has failed to do. This has forced the VHP and other likeminded organisations to launch a movement to force the Government to curb the menace, he said. The Bajrang Dal and other orgnisations will fully back VHP in its agitation and our cadres will openly join the agitation being launched for curbing bovine smuggling, said Rakesh Kumar co-convener BD. He said there is lot of public resentment against the increasing bovine smuggling and at various places people have resorted to violence when they seized the vehicles carrying bovines to the Valley. It may be recalled that recently at Ghagwal in Samba district a truck was set on fire by frenzy mob which was carrying bovines to Srinagar. The police authorities also show helplessness saying that in absence of stringent laws they are helpless to curb this menace. People often blame police against the increasing menace of bovine smuggling but it can't go beyond the law and after seizing the vehicles and animals police present challan and registers the case within the parameters of the law. But later the smugglers through court order again get the custody of the animals, said a senior police officer on the conditionb of anonymity. He said the menace can't be curbed unless there is not a strong law under which the smuggling is made illegal in the State |
