| ‘Congress should contest Assembly elections alone’ | | | Early Times Report
Srinagar, May 25: After a dismal show in the Parliamentary elections and with the two coalition partners choosing to wash dirty linen in public, senior leaders suggest ending the coalition on a good note and contesting the forthcoming Assembly elections alone. ALL India Congress Committee (AICC) member and former Minister, Abdul Gani Vakil today said the party must highlight the achievements of the former Chief Minister, Ghulam Nabi Azad during Assembly elections and refrain from forging alliances with other parties. Vakil blamed the coalition partner National Conference for the poll debacle saying the Chief Minister and other important Ministries were held by the NC, Vakil said. Another reason for drubbing in Lok Sabha elections was surrendering of Chief Minister's post to NC that too for full term which proved detrimental to Congress base in the state. The senior Congress leader said that the rotational Chief Ministership was an ideal arrangement that could have benefited both Congress and NC and increased its poll prospectus Pertinently, Vakil was among the senior Congress leaders who campaigned for NC leaders in the Kashmir valley during the Lok Sabha elections. He said Congress will face electorate on its own performance, pro-friendly policies and historical works which were started by Azad during his tenure as Chief Minister of the state. Suggesting that one party rule is generally favoured by the people, senior Congress leader said that with all the uncertainties associated with the coalition politics, people are inclined towards one party rule. People are interested in the development and corruption free society, he said adding Congress will work hard to ensure that it can form the next government on its own. |
