'Ab ki baar Mufti sarkar' echoes in Kashmir
Mufti gains from Modi

Early Times Report

Srinagar, May 25: The BJP slogan which gripped the collective imagination of the country - Ab ki baar Modi sarkar - has found an interesting echo in the valley. Heard in colleges, offices, tea-shops, auto-stands and in shikara parkings along the Dal Lake is a curious refrain said half-jokingly: Ab ki baar Mufti sarkar.
The incidental similarity of PDP patron Mufti Sayeed's name to that of Modi has set off discourse, heard in many quarters now in Srinagar.
Reports indicate that the same refrain is being echoed in remote parts of north and south Kashmir. The more it is being said, the more it is being repeated among people in good humour.
Political analysts in the state say that while the refrain of 'Ab ki baar Mufti sarkar' began in the Valley in a humorous vein, it has tangible benefits for the party. "In the run up to the Parliamentary polls, 'Ab ki baar Modi sarkar' had become a powerful anthem and force-multiplier for the BJP across the country. The constant repetition of 'Ab ki baar Mufti sarkar' can have the same benefits for the PDP in Jammu and Kashmir,' said Shujat Bukhari, a senior journalist in the state.
A discernible difference in the power equations in the Valley is already visible.
With a thumping win in the Lok Sabha polls, PDP has acquired fresh muscle. At a recent dinner hosted for some prominent persons in the Valley, Mehbooba Mufti glowed with new confidence. Interestingly, a number of guests present at the dinner remarked that Mehbooba's posture and body language is now of a winner.
The three years of the Mufti Government in the state from 2002-2005 was appreciated in many aspects. The anti-incumbency wave against the NC government and its' failure to live up to the expectations of the people, can be co-related to the refrain of 'Ab ki baar Mufti sarkar' being heard in diverse parts of the state.
Though the state has three prominent candidates for the post of Chief Minister - Ghulam Nabi Azad, Dr Farooq Abdullah and Mufti Mohammed Sayeed but the Lok Sabha elections have changed the dimensions of the state politics and now it seems to be a one sided game. "People have already pronounced their verdict against Ghulam Nabi Azad and Dr Farooq in the Parliamentary elections. The wave of 'Ab ki baar Mufti sarkar' is indicative that the people of Jammu and Kashmir want a change for the better, and hence are rooting for PDP," said Akhtar.
