Nawaz Sharif's Delhi visit and the Kashmiri’s hope

JAMMU, May 25: Pakistan Prime Minister Mian Nawaz Sharif on May 24 finally accepted the New Delhi's invite for the May 26 swearing-in ceremony of Prime Minister-designate Narendra Modi, BJP leader. He took three long days to take decision. The decision was taken by Kashmiri leaders, both the separatist and so-called mainstream, including self-styled chairman of the APHC M Mirwaiz Umar farooq and NC leader and state Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, to mean the opening of a new chapter in the India-Pakistan relations and a great step forward in the direction of the resolution of the so-called Kashmir issue.
They spoke in one voice, thus making it impossible to distinguish as to who belonged to the separatist camp and who didn't. And it was not altogether unexpected. Infact, it was expected that Umar and Omar, like others in the Valley who believe in and preach the dangerous two-nation concept and seek another communal partition of India, would be on the same page and sing the same break-India song to pander to their respective communal constituencies, which do not trust them anymore.
In other words, it was expected that Mirwaiz and Omar, like other disgruntled elements in Kashmir, would use the opportunity to create an impression that Jammu & Kashmir is a disputed region that needed a political solution that is acceptable to the people of the state belonging to a particular religious sect that dominates the government, leads and controls almost all the religio-political organizations and has been treating Jammu province and Ladakh region as their colonies and the people of these two distinct regions as their slaves since October 1947.
The communal Kashmiri hope that Prime Minister Narendra Modi, like the outgoing Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, the nominee of AICC president Sonia Gandhi, could compromise the Indian position on Jammu & Kashmir to resolve the so-called Kashmir issue is misplaced. It is not going to happen.
His stand on Pakistan and Jammu & Kashmir is clear: Jammu & Kashmir is an integral part of India and shall ever remain so; no Nehruvian approach towards Jammu & Kashmir; policy would be guided by Dr Shyama Prasad Mookerjee's political philosophy and his supreme sacrifice in Kashmir itself in 1953 for the cause of India; Article 370 has caused enough damage to the state and its people and it's time to hold a comprehensive debate on it so that it is repealed; Pakistan must stop cross-border terrorism, destroy the terror-related infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied-Jammu & Kashmir; no threat to Pakistan and any other country but zero tolerance by other countries in the internal affairs of India; Indian unity and territorial integrity and sovereignty has to be maintained at any cost; and India to stem all the rot and attain a status in the comminity of self-respecting nations.
Narendra Modi and the BJP have repeatedly explained their position and those who think that they would dilute their stand are living in a fool's paradise and in a world of the past. And the manner in which Narendra Modi invited heads of the SAARC nations to Delhi -- which has been described by many as his "master stroke" - must make everyone understand that India under him will play an important and pro-active role in the region. Initiative in this region comprising India, Bhutan, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Bhutan and Maldives will be in the hands of New Delhi was the Narendra Modi's message.
A dozen of Kashmiris, who masquerades as leaders of Kashmiri people, would do well to read the writing on the wall and refashion their whole approach accordingly without losing a moment. As for Pakistan, it has also to behave in a responsible manner.
