| Kupwara falls prey to inefficiency of Municipal Committee | | Improper sanitation, blocked drains irk people | | Early Times Report
KUPWARA, May 25: People in north Kashmir's Kupwara district are up in arms against the municipal authorities for doing little to maintain proper sanitation and to remove garbage mess in the areas falling under the jurisdiction of Kupwara Municipal Committee. Garbage generated from markets and residential areas is dumped on banks of water streams, Bus stand and other public places due to the absence of any scientific dumping system in Kupwara. Chocked drains both interior and exteriors is posing a major health risk to people and pedestrians. Locals said heaps of solid waste which contains polythene, plastics and other non-biodegradable material emanates foul smell. "Heaps of garbage everywhere gives an unpleasant experience to commuters," the locals complained. The town alone generates average 25-30 tonnes of solid waste every day and people alleged shopkeepers were major contributors of garbage as most of them dump their solid waste on the roadsides. The commuters are compelled to cover their faces to avoid stinking smell. |
