| Modi's SAARC diplomacy: It is advantage for India! | | | Asif Iqbal Naik Jammu, May 27: Narendra Modi has won the first round of regional diplomacy by inviting the SAARC heads to his swearing in and starting his maiden innings as the Prime Minister of India by holding meaningful dialogue with all the state heads including Pakistan on the very first day in office. Through SAARC diplomacy, Modi has tried to bridge the gap between India and these South Asian countries particularly with Pakistan as the two countries have sour relations since the independence and particularly in wake of the aftermath of 26/11 Mumbai terror attack and beheading of Indian soldiers in Poonch area of Jammu and Kashmir. Even though newly take over Prime Minister Narindra Modi launched scathing attack on Pakistan during election campaign, but at the same time Modi cannot afford to sideline Pakistan strategically, particularly for peace on borders. Thus instead of inviting Pakistan directly, Modi chose the SAARC path to avoid any major controversy which ended on successful note. The meeting not only helped Modi to raise the issue of terrorism and infiltration with Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, but also gave him an opportunity to begin his work on his first day in office with a chance to meet the Prime Ministers and premiers of eight countries constituting the talks that External Affairs Ministry labeled as 'fruitful talks' wherein Modi emphasized on the idea of SAARC for regional cooperation and how it can contribute to growth and development in all countries. He also underlined the concerns relating to terrorism and expressed that Pakistan should extend help to India in the speedy trial of the 26/11 Mumbai attack. He also expressed his concern with Pakistan to ensure that their boundaries are not used by the terrorists. The visit of SAARC heads will also help India economically in future as several economic initiatives that can promote the trade and business between these countries were also discussed during day long meetings between Modi and the heads of these countries. In the end it can be said that "Modi's SAARC diplomacy "paid the dividends to India's foreign policy of the newly taken BJP led NDA government in center and can help the country to improve the good relationship with its neighboring countries in future. |
