| Fate of NC's Srinagar legislators hangs in balance | | | Jehangir Rashid SRINAGAR, May 30: Fate of at least five legislators of National Conference of the Srinagar district hangs in balance following the recent drubbing they faced at the hands of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in their respective Assembly segments in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections. Sources told Early Times that legislators like Mubarak Gul, Dr. Sheikh Mustafa Kamaal, Mohammad Yasin Shah, Peer Afaq Ahmad and Irfan Ahmad Shah have their backs to the wall following poor show in the Parliamentary elections. The search for replacements has already begun with the formal announcement being made in the coming months. These legislators may not get the mandate from their constituencies in the 2014 Assembly elections slated to be held in October-November. As these legislators lost in their Assembly constituencies to PDP's Tariq Hameed Qarra, it is quite possible that they might be dropped once the mandate is announced by NC for this year's Assembly elections. These legislators have attracted wrath from their electorate since they failed to deliver on ground and could not provide any relief to the masses in general. People in general are displeased with the performance of National Conference-Congress coalition Government in the state. Masses in Srinagar have accused the ruling dispensation of ignoring them with no development in sight. Srinagar, the summer capital of the state was always considered by National Conference as their bastion. The party leaders in their wildest of dreams had never thought that it would be difficult for them to hang on to the Assembly seats of this all important district of the state. But the 2014 Lok Sabha elections changed the entire course of things with NC legislators feeling the heat. Given the recent constituency wise details of the Lok Sabha elections for Srinagar-Budgam seat the equation might change in the Assembly elections later this year as well. In such a scenario it would be very difficult for NC to win all the eight seats from the Srinagar district. The party may win some seats, but not all of them given its poor show in Lok Sabha elections. National Conference President, Dr. Farooq Abdullah has already made it a point that the non-performers would not get mandate for the Assembly elections. Dr. Abdullah expressed dissatisfaction that the party legislators have failed to come up to the expectations of their electorate ever since they got elected to the Assembly. Legislators like Ali Mohammad Sagar and Shameema Firdous have their seats 'secured' since they won from their respective Assembly segments. MLA Amira Kadal, Nasir Aslam Wani too may have to give up his seat since it is believed that Omar Abdullah might fight the next Assembly elections from this seat or Sonwar seat. It remains to be seen how the party would approach the Assembly elections and who would be it candidates from the eight Assembly segments of Srinagar district. The leaders and the sitting legislators have their fingers crossed with the party president all set to take the decision on his own with consulting any other leader of the party. |
