| Taking U-turn is recurrent phenomenon for NC | | Farooq takes on Omar, says J&K will remain part of India | | Rustam Jammu, May 30: Working president of the National Conference -- which was decimated by the people of Kashmir in the just-held Lok Sabha elections -- and Chief Minister Omar Abdullah says that Jammu and Kashmir will secede from India if Article 370 is repealed or tampered with and tells the BJP Government at the centre that the choice is its. If it wants that Jammu and Kashmir should remain part of India, then it has to eschew the demanding seeking a debate on Article 370 and its abrogation - a stand that has been roundly condemned across the country. The RSS even went to extent of saying that the "state is not Omar Abdullah's parental estate and Article 370 or no Article 370, the state shall ever remain part of India", whereas many have questioned his right to speak for the state saying a party that was rejected by its own constituency in Kashmir and a party that didn't get even 10 per cent of the total votes polled has no right to speak from the State of Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh and people these three regions house. As if all this was not enough to show Omar Abdullah his place, his own father Farooq Abdullah on Thursday joins those who had been condemning the Omar Abdullah's statement that Jammu and Kashmir will not remain part of India if Article 370 is tampered with or abrogated. Farooq Abdullah, who suffered a massive defeat at the hands of the PDP in the Srinagar Lok Sabha constituency and who is also the president of the NC, on Thursday took a complete U-turn and said that he had never said that Jammu and Kashmir will go out of India if Article 370 was tampered with. I never said that "(Jammu &) Kashmir will part ways from India if BJP comes to power and if Article 370 is tampered with". "Don't put words in my mouth. I have never said Kashmir will secede from India if BJP comes to power. We are part of India and Article 370 guarantees special status to Jammu and Kashmir under Indian constitution," he said, adding that the state is a part of India and will remain so. It bears recalling that during the campaigning, Farooq Abdullah repeatedly attacked BJP's PM candidate Narendra Modi and the BJP and declared that "Kashmir won't remain part of India if Article 370 is tampered with and if BJP comes to power at the Centre". Why this sudden change in the attitude of Farooq Abdullah who, like his son, is known for taking complete U-turns? Is he thinking in terms of building bridges with the BJP Government at the Centre? Or, has he realized that the NC suffered a massive defeat because of his son and his coterie. Something must be there. |
