| By-poll unlikely to be held in Nagrota, Wachi, Baramulla | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, May 30: Possibilities seem to be quite remote for holding by-poll in the three Assembly constituencies in Jammu and Kashmir, which fell vacant after Jugal Kishore, Mehbooba Mufti and Muzaffar Hussain Baig, got elected to the Lok Sabha. In 2008 Assembly election Muzaffar Hussain Baig and Mehbooba Mufti had won the Assembly seats from north and south Kashmir respectively. However, they were fielded by the PDP in the just concluded Lok Sabha election. Mehbooba won the Anantnag seat and Baig bagged Baramullah seat. Jugal had been elected to the Assembly from Nagrota constituency in 2008 poll. Jugal too win Jammu Lok Sabha seat and has already submitted his resignation as MLA to the speaker Mubarak Gul. Official sources said that since the next Assembly election was due after six months the Election Commission is not in favour of holding a by-poll in the three Assembly segments vacated by Jugal Kishore, Baig and Mehbooba. Reports said that the NC led coalition Government too is not willing to go in for a bypoll because of the drubbing the Congress and the NC received in the recent Lok Sabha poll. While the Congress lost Jammu, Udhampur and Ladakh seats, the NC lost all the three Lok Sabha seats in the Kashmir valley.Hence the NC and the Congress does not want to lose face again during the by-poll. The two want to rebuild their organizations and woo voters by the time the schedule for the next Assembly poll was announced. The Election Commission sources said that if the three seats remain vacant in the Assembly it may not have any far reaching consequences on the conduct of the proceedings of the House. Since the next Assembly was to take place after five to six months it was not advisable to hold the by-poll this time. It would be simple waste of resources. Reports said that if left to the BJP and the PDP these two parties will prefer holding the by-poll immediately because they feel that their candidates were sure to win thereby sending panic waves in the NC and the Congress. |
