Kishtwar, May 30: The inhabitants and social activists of Kishtwar have slammed the Public Health Engineering (PHE) department for supplying unhygienic and dirty water to over one lakh population of Kishtwar town and others residing in its peripheral areas as a result of which, the people particularly the children, are suffering from water borne diseases. While talking to Early Times, several people complained about supply of contaminated water beside acute shortage of the same in the district."Our area is being supplied with unhygienic drinking water even as we are getting water only once in a week," said Ajaiz Giri of Poonchal. He said that the people are suffering on account of shortage of drinking water and added that the department hardly supplies water through tankers in the village. The people informed that the only filtration plant at Kishtwar is non-functional since last so many years and alleged that department is withdrawing the money worth lakhs of rupees on account of filtration charges. They said that despite commissioning of water lifting scheme that pulls water from river Chenab, the people continuously are facing the water problems. Some inhabitants blamed the poor distribution system for water crises in the district. "There is sufficient water available in the Kishtwar, but due to its improper distribution the problem of water crises escalates with each passing day," said Farooq Tapal.
