NC making last ditch effort to rejuvenate Party
6/3/2014 10:58:57 PM
Early Times Report

Jammu, June 3: In a bid to gain its lost ground, national conference is making desperate efforts both at the party as well as government level ahead of the Assembly elections likely to be held before winters.
With Omar Abdullah led government already announcing some populist measures after doing away with its new employment policy and also on its way to give some sops to the employees including enhancement of retirement age from 58 to 60 years NC leadership is on its last bid to save its image and seek the support of people in the forthcoming election and restrain its rival Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) from regaining power in the state.
What has disturbed the NC most is that its vote share was much less than its coalition partner Congress party also and the Party leadership is all out to win back support of the people and refurbish its image by taking various populist measures, sources said.
Sources said there is already a lot of resentment in the Party and its workers are up in arms against the ministers whom they accuse of maintaining a distance from public which led to Party's rout in the Lok Sabha poll. Moreover the workers are not also happy with Party's alliance with Congress saying whenever NC formed Government with Congress its image was dented in the State in general and Kashmir Valley in particular.
Sources said majority opinion in NC is that the Party should snap ties with Congress to save its image from further damage and should not waste any more time. Some staunch Party men are of the opinion that NC should not mind sacrificing its Government six months ahead of schedule and concentrate on strengthening party at grass root level, sources added.
Sources said the Party men are also against the advisors of Omar Abdullah and blame them for misguiding the Chief Minister on important issues. Appointment of inexperienced people as advisors has damaged the party to a great extent.
Going by their suggestions the NC has started damage control by announcing some changes in organisation besides announcing the reshuffle in Council of Ministers, sources said. Though there is not enough time before the Party it might take some more populist measures, sources added.
But the time will only tell that how far the Party will succeed in its game plan as PDP has made a great dent in its stronghold in Valley and the people are not also satisfied with last five and half year's performance of Omar Abdullah Government. Under these circumstances whether the populist measures of the NC led Government will work or not is a million dollar question.
