| Upbeat BJP, now eying 'magic figure 44+' | | | Kunal Shrivatsa
JAMMU, June 3: Encouraged by the grand success it received in the three seats recently held Lok Sabha polls, the Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) is now aiming high to achieve a clear majority in the Legislative Assembly elections slated for later this year but it has created tongue wagering within state polity -as how and from where?. BJP which bagged three LS seats of Jammu-Poonch, Udhampur-Doda and Ladakh in the state has launched 'Mission 44+' goal much on the pattern of its 'Mission 272+' for the Lok Sabha, however, the benchmark set up by the saffron party is a fitting case of 'aiming too high' and without having a 'reality check'. No doubt, the saffron party did tremendously well in Jammu and Ladakh regions of the state but it looks like whosoever has mooted the idea of 'Mission 44' is either unaware of the ground realities of the state or living in an imaginary world. Buoyed by the major gains in Jammu- Poonch and Udhampur-Doda Lok Sabha seats, the BJP has set a target for 44 seats but even if the party's good performance in parliamentary polls is taken into account, the possibility of attaining the goal of 'Mission 44' is not only quite distinctive but untenable as the party has negligible presence in Kashmir Valley where 46 assembly seats are at stake. The dream of BJP to win 44 or more seats in the state could only be realized when it is able to make its presence felt in Kashmir and if the media reports are to believed, it has already started its exercise to brighten its poll prospects in the Valley. The state BJP leadership as well as Rashtriya Swyamsevak Sangh (RSS) cadre has set into motion the process of making mass connection with common people as well as the other stake holders in Kashmir. Though the BJP, which has strong foothold in Jammu region where only 37 assembly segments are in offering, is not going to help the saffron party's cause as even if it consolidate its position in Dogra hinterland it would still not able to hit the bull's eye of 44+ seats. In the just concluded Lok Sabha polls, BJP led in 15 assembly constituencies of Jammu-Poonch Lok Sabha seat while it was able to get lead in as many as nine assembly segments in Udhampur-Doda Lok Sabha seat and an assembly seat in Ladakh which means the party scored over its rivals in 25 seats which is 19 less than the magical figure of 44. The poor show of the party in Kashmir region continued in the recent Lok Sabha elections as it once again failed to make inroads in Valley. The BJP, which had won 11 seats in 2008 Assembly elections, presently has effective strength of 9 MLAs in the State Legislative Assembly comprising of 87 members as has not yet revoked the expulsion of two of its MLAs. |
