| NBCC's restoration work, suffering of Jammuites has no end limit | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, June 3: With the Secretariat move from Jammu to the summer capital, here starts the digging work in the Winter Capital of the state under different policies of the state as well as central government but the same has become a concern for the Jammu region. As the unplanned digging for laying sewerage pipes is going on in the winter capital, one can witness rampant traffic Jams in Jammu. With this, the graph of pollution is also touching pinnacles but the executing companies are least bothered about the same and have failed to provide any alternative to the Jammuites. Astounding is the fact that the digging for laying sewerage pipes in the city has been going on for past five years and despite crossing several deadlines, the condition of the city roads is miserable. The project of laying of sewerage pipes in Jammu was started in 2009-10 and it was to be completed in 2012, but the deadline has been extended four times. As per the new deadline, the work will be completed in April, 2015. This time one of the busiest markets in the city, Rajinder Bazaar, has been chosen for digging and all traffic on this route has been suspended till the work ends. Residents of the area in and around Rajinder Bazaar on Wednesdaywoke up with dug-up road outside their homes. The NBCC authorities are putting the onus on the government and said they got only four months throughout the year to work. "When the Secretariat was in Jammu, the government doesn't allow us to go ahead with the digging work citing the problem of traffic. During the monsoon period, the government stops us from digging any major road," said an official from NBCC. "Either the government say don't work or gives us freedom of work, but there is no communication like that. We are the one who suffer. If the work has to be done, major roads will be dug up, but the deadline will be extended as we don't get enough time to work," he added Locals said that the Chowk always witnesses heavy rush of traffic and due construction work near Jewel theater entire traffic often comes to stand still causing much convenience to the commuters amid snarl and prevailing sweltering heat. "All people including public and private transporters especially those who skip traveling through Bikram Chowk fly over have to enter into city of Temples through this road or leaving through this road but the construction work without diverting the traffic to alternate road results into frequent jams. "It force the driver to move at snail's as the debris created following digging is laying on either side of the road reducing it to half" Ram Parsad a fruit hawker said . He also lamented absence of the traffic cops in the area and said that with no one around to regulate the traffic it takes people several hours to get away from the mess. Pertinently, few days back Minister for Urban Development and Urban Local Bodies, Nawang Rigzin Jora has inspected various sewerage and other projects of Urban Development Department in Jammu. The works/projects being executed by UEED and National Buildings Construction Corporation Limited (NBCC) inspected by the Minister during the day long tour of the city and its adjoining areas included Sewerage and Treatment Plant Jagti, laying of trunk main at Shahidi Chowk, Raghunath Bazar and Gujjar Nagar, besides various other projects were also inspected. |
