| Omar realizes futility of raising AFSPA revocation | | | Early Times Report SRINAGAR, June 20: The Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has now officially dropped the issue of revocation of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA). During his maiden meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Omar did not make any mention of it. A press statement issued after the meeting with the PM didn't make any mention of this issue. Even in his meeting with the Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh, this issue did not come up for discussion and it has been confirmed by the press statement issued by the department headed by Omar. The CM has been quite vocal about in the past. He had even made mention of it with the outgoing Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. Omar had also stated publicly that Manmohan Singh was bit flexible on it, though he was vetoed by the then DefenCe Minister. However, with the change of guard, and Prime Minister Modi's clear stand on it, the CM probably thought it politically wise to drop this contentious issue. According to sources, the CM was also told not to bring up this topic during discussion with the PM. Omar had been given to understand that this is one issue on which the new Modi led Government has clear stand. The Government has already made it clear that its top priority is to strengthen the internal security . The CM was using AFSPA for his political gains and had put much at stake on it. It's for this reason that he even announced the date of its revocation from some parts of the State. However, it had not happened. CM was also learnt to have deliberately avoided and dropped the issue as it would have left a sour note to his first official meeting the PM. It's because in the run upto the election, the role of the Central Government would be very crucial. |
