| 'Savior of Noushera'- Brig Usman remembered | | | Early Times Report
Rajouri, July 3: Army today held a memorial function at Jhangar in Noushera tehsil on the occassion of martyrdom day of Brig Mohd Usman MVC, who is known as "savior of Noushera or Sher of Noushera". The function was chaired by Lt Gen KH Singh, , GOC 16 Corps and was also attended by Maj Gen Saranjeet Singh, GOC, 25 Infantry Division, AK Attrri, DIG police , DIG BSF sector HQs, Kataria and many other senior civil and army officers and civilians of the area. Brigadier Mohd Usman was killed at Jhangar on July 3 while defending the border during 1947-1948 in Noushera sector and was awarded with MVC posthumously. The celebrations were organized by Jhnagar Battalion under the aegis of Noushera Brigade Commanded by Brig Pratik Sharma. The celebrations started with wreath lying ceremony followed by religious discourse by 'dharam gurus'. Speaking on the occasion Army Commander said , "Brig Mohd Usman , played major role in re capture of Jhangar from the clutches of Pakistan forces which could become possible with the active participation of the local people and children termed by Brig Usmanas Bal Sainiks." Later he interacted with the local population of Nowshera and those who were recently treated in the 15 days long Medical Camp at Naoshera. Bhimrao Sonawane Retd DCP Mumbai Police and Retd Brig Mohan Nikam were also felicitated on this occasion as their fathers N/K Krishna Sonawane , MVC and Lt Col RD Nikam were the associates of Brig Usman. Corps Commander also handed over wheel chairs to the needy people, honored Veer Naris and ex-servicemen of the area who had displayed courage while fighting militancy and fighting against Pakistan army in Kargil and had won gallantry awards. Brig Usman was born in Bibipur,Azamgarh on July 15,1912. Second lieutenant Usman trained at Sanhurst by the British army was commissioned into 10th Baluch regiment and also served at Burma during World War II. He was given the command of 50 Independent Parachute Brigade to fight against the Pakistan who had already intruded deep into the Indian territory in Noushera sector Despite of being outnumbered by the enemy 50 Parachute brigade under the command of Brig Usman was able to recapture Jhangar and defend Noushera for which Brig Usman earned the endearments of 'Savior of Noushera' and 'Noushera ka Sher'. During the occasion One of his colleagues the then captain SC Sinha remembered that every evening at 5.30 pm Brig Usman held a meeting at the sand model room. On July 3, 1948 when Brig Usman achieved martyrdom, the meeting was advanced for half hour. As Brig Usman was heading toward his office four 25 pounder shells hit the meeting area and Brig Usman was killed under a hanging rock where at present a grand memorial has been constructed in his memory. |
