Militants decamp with victim's weapon after fatal assault

PATTAN, Aug 2: Suspected militants attacked a policeman with an axe before decamping with his rifle in Pattan town of Baramulla District in North Kashmir late Saturday. According to police official , an Indian Reserve Police (IRP) personnel was injured critically after he was assaulted with an axe before decamping with his service rifle. This is the second such incident of weapon snatching by suspected gunmen in the conflict-torn region in this week official said. A police official told that IRP man has been identified as Firdous Ahmad Baba( belt no 683) a constable with the Indian Reserve Police, who was posted at the main market in the North Kashmir town, was attacked by a group of militants with an axe. The militants managed to flee with the policeman's INSAS rifle. The official said that Baba has received serious head and neck injury as he was with hit with an axe in his head and neck and has been immediately shifted to nearby hospital where from he was shifted to Sheri Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS) Soura Srinagar for specialized treatment. However, the condition of the injured policeman was very critical, as he has received life threatening wounds a senior doctor at SKIMS said. Soon after the attack. Army's 29 Rashtriya Rifle (RR) Special Operations Group (SOG) CRPF and J&K Police cordoned off the whole area and launched a massive search operation to nab the suspected militants. On August 1, a policeman claimed that militants snatched his service rifle while he was on duty. The constable posted on guard duty at the residence of a session's judge at Bemina locality of Srinagar. Senior security official had told the press that they had alerted the policemen about gun snatching by militants. Meanwhile a top government official told early times that security has been put on high alert across the north Kashmir following series of militant's attacks.
