SRINAGAR, Aug 3: Quite contrary to the public perception the staff and students of University of Kashmir are not in favour of the appointment of a local Vice-Chancellor and instead they want a strong Vice-Chancellor to be put in the chair even if he is an outsider.
This thing became clear during the interaction of search committee members with the faculty members, other staff and various student representatives of the University of Kashmir. The search committee was constituted by Governor Narendra Nath Vohra for the appointment of the new Vice-Chancellor of University of Kashmir.
The search committee is headed by Professor Goverdhan Mehta, National Research Professor at the School of Chemistry, University of Hyderabad. The committee also comprises of two more members Professor A M Pathan, former Vice-Chancellor, Maulana Azad National Urdu University (MANUU) and Professor M.M Solanki, renowned professor of chemistry.
The search committee members held interactions with representatives of Kashmir University Teachers Association (teaching faculty), representatives of Kashmir University Ministerial Staff Association (non-teaching), representatives of Kashmir University Officers Association (officials), research scholars and students during their two day stay at campus. The purpose of holding interactions was to get feedback of all stakeholders of varsity before they short list the probable candidates.
Sources told Early Times that during their interaction with the search committee members the staff of University of Kashmir said that they want a strong Vice-Chancellor to be put in place. The staff members said that it is immaterial whether the Vice-Chancellor is local or an outsider since they are more interested in results on the ground.
“Some of the staff members were all praise for former Vice-Chancellor, Jalees Ahmad Khan Tareen and said that the new Vice-Chancellor should be like Tareen. They also said that a local Vice-Chancellor may not be able to deliver things since he is not position to take bold decisions. The staff members said that politics should be kept aloof from the process of selection of the Vice-Chancellor,” said sources.
Sources said that student representatives raised the issue of student politics with the search committee members during their interaction. The student representatives made it clear that they would support the selection of Vice-Chancellor who guarantees that ban would be lifted from the student politics at the campus.
Sources said that around 40 nominations were received by the varsity authorities including local and non-locals for the position of Vice-Chancellor of University of Kashmir. Some of the eminent non-local scientists have also applied for this coveted post and one cannot rule out the possibility of any non-local scientist being given the charge of Vice-Chancellor, University of Kashmir.
The members of search committee shall meet very soon at New Delhi and carry out interaction with short listed candidates. After this they will submit the panel of three candidates to Governor Vohra, who is the chancellor of University of Kashmir. Governor Vohra in consultation with chief minister Omar Abdullah, who is the pro-chancellor, will select one out of the three for the position of Vice-Chancellor of University of Kashmir.
The incumbent interim Vice-Chancellor, University of Kashmir Professor A M Shah is using his political pressure to influence the search committee for securing this coveted position. Professor Shah even met Governor Couple of days back in order to seek favour from the chancellor of varsity. Professor Shah is said to be very close relative of Pradesh Congress Committee President, Professor Saif-ud-din Soz.
