SRINAGAR, Aug 8 : With no curb on land mafia, the prices of land in the state, particularly in the valley have become unaffordable for the general public and unplanned colonies are mushrooming across the capital cities in connivance of concerned authorities.
The government has virtually surrendered to the land mafia who call the shots in deciding rates of the land clearly violating the norms as set by the government. "Now the land mafia is eying the fringe areas of the Srinagar city where it has started the process of buying and selling of the already shrinking agricultural land. It is not only the agricultural land that the mafia has in mind; in fact it is the prized Safron land that the mafia is actively considering for the purpose of buying and selling. It is a dangerous move and could prove detrimental for the people associated with production and trade of Saffron," said Ajaz Ahmad from Pampore.
"The rates of land in and around the Srinagar city have gone sky rocketing as the government delegated the powers to the brokers to fix rates who take people for ride. The mafia is enjoying the patronage of the people in power, otherwise how come they dare to fix their own rates," said Ghulam Mohammad from Bhagate Barzulla, Srinagar.
A top ranking officer of the government wishing not to be named admitted that the land mafia is active in the state, particularly in the Kashmir valley. This officer confessed that the government is doing nothing to overcome this menace.
One can see the buildings, coming up in the agricultural land and as a result of it the agricultural land is shrinking at a tremendous pace. "Every person of the state will suffer immensely if the activities of the land mafia are not checked. People of the state will suffer for want of food if the agricultural land is not saved from the invasion of the mafia," said Zahoor Ahmad from Bhagate kanipora, whose views were sought by the Early Times on this growing concern.
