| Sheikh Nazir's chest beating on August 9 aimed to please secessionist sentiments | | | Early Times Report Srinagar, Aug 8: Sheikh Nazir, the nephew of late Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah has always been an apologist and a progandist for the Sheikh dynasty in the same breath. Come August 9 and Sheikh Nazir has been releasing to the press the same statement that he had written during the days his uncle and the NC had been running the Plebiscite Front seeking referendum in J&K which was the NC way to press for secession of the State from the rest of the country. August 9 was a dark day in the history of the State not because there was a conspiracy against the Sheikh. It was a dark day because the Sheikh who was the Prime Minister of the State had to be arrested because he had been hatching a conspiracy against the integrity and sovereignty of the country. So instead of calling for observing a dark day on August 9 because the NC had lost power on that day, the NC veteran should have chosen to issue a statement trying to clarify that the Sheikh had made a secessionist attempt which was uncalled for and regrettable. Sheikh Nazir has chosen to blame Delhi, the Sadr-e-Riyasat at that time and the Army and police for doing there duty. He should remember if the Kashmir conspiracy case had not been withdrawn by Nehru the Sheikh might never have become the Chief Minister and nor perhaps been able to avoid sentence and subsequent imprisonment. So calling for a black day on August 9 is not only unfortunate but irresponsible as well. Only one reason can be accepted for issuance of such a statement by Sheikh Nazir. The NC is politically in dire straits and it feels a secessionist shot in its arms is necessary to keep the NC politically relevant. That can be the only reason to justify Sheikh Nazir's call for a dark day on August 9. History cannot be subverted by calling people cronies and systems and laws as crooked. Who did wrong by trying to reverse the hands of the clock must be left for responsible historians to do. Chest beating by Sheikh Nazir will not justify the NC having tried to fight for a sultanate in J&K in 1953. |
