Jammu, Oct 5: On the hind side of the rapid expansion of the operations of the Indian Railways in the state, shortage of man-power at Jammu Tawi, a major railway station of the country, is causing inconvenience to the passengers. Moreover, the station has been facing regular shortage of 10 per cent staff in various wings for a long time.
Railway officials told Early Times that there was requirement of eight employees to properly regulate ticket and reservation counters, but shortage of men was hampering functioning of these counters, moreover, the passengers have to wait to get their ticket.
"The rush at Jammu Tawi Railway has increased, since train has been chugging between Holi-town- Jammu Tawi track and instead of providing sufficient staff at Jammu Tawi Railway station to cater rush of pilgrims and tourist, the Northern Railways authorities were planning to make more station functional," said insider, wishing not to be named.
"Ten ticket counters are available at Jammu Tawi Railway station but only three are functional due to which long queues of passengers can be seen anytime at one of the major Railway station of state" they said and added "Recently two more stations at Katra base camp and Chack Rakhal, were made functional."
The sources claimed that three counters were not enough to cater the rush of Vashino Devi pilgrims, two more counters are required. "This is not only in Jammu Tawi Railway station but same problems exists in other stations like Udhampur, Bari Brahmana, Samba and Katuha other" said an official, and added "The station witnesses long queues in morning and evening whenever passenger board on Diesel Multiple Unit (DMU) train which runs on Pathankot to Udhampur track due to lack employees shortage.
When contacted, Divisional Transport Manager, Railway Jammu, R N Meena acknowledged the shortage of employees at ticket counters and said that they could manage.
He further said that the shortage of staff increases due to gap of recruitment drive. "Retirement process goes on and gap widens gradually. The new recruitment is being done by Railways Recruitment Board. It takes times, but we make extra arrangement during peak hours to serve the passengers conveniently", the DTM Railway said.
