Each time Delhi talks peace, Pak will slap | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Oct 5: Pakistan army and its rangers have started targeting civilian populations living close to the LoC and the International Border (IB) in Jammu province even as they are purportedly trying to target the Indian Army and BSF positions. There had been a welcome calm on both the LoC and the IB for more than a month till the fresh spate of ceasefire violations were started by Pakistan. One girl has so been killed and over a dozen other civilians have been wounded in Pakistan firing. More than 3000 villagers living close to the IB in Arnia sub-sector and other areas have migrated out of their homes to safer places. Violating the ceasefire agreement signed by India and Pakistan in November 2003 has become a regular practice for Pakistan army and its paramilitary forces. While resorting to unprovoked firing Pakistan has been using mortar shells to target places on the Indian side of the border indiscriminately. More than three dozen houses have suffered damage because of the mortar shelling by Pakistan forces during the last four days. What has been prompting Pakistan to resort to ceasefire violations? This is one serious question, but more serious than this question is the need to know what has the otherwise ostensibly hardline and strong government headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi been doing to check these violations those are a direct challenge to the sovereignty and integrity of the country. What Delhi needs to understand is the fact that Pakistan has been violating ceasefire on both the LoC and the IB in Jammu and Kashmir and nowhere else. While addressing the UN general assembly, Prime Minister Narendra Modi delivered a statesmanly address. He spoke of talks and peace with Pakistan. He also spoke of peace being possible only if neighbours learn how to respect each other and understand problems with a view to resolve them. That is a fine statement, but no Prime Minister of India right since 1947 ever spoke of war with Pakistan. Every Prime Minister in the past has spoken of peace and talks and trade and good neighbourly relations with Pakistan. The problem has been that despite dangling an olive branch to her neighbour, India has been getting a belligerent response. Exactly in the same manner this time, after Modi delivered his peace message to Pakistan at the UN, Pakistan started pounding Indian villages on the borders in J&K. It is clear that the civilian government is not in control in Pakistan. It has not been able to handle a cleric who comes from outside to stoke trouble in Pakistan. It has also not been able to handle a cricketer turned politician who congratulated the present Prime Minister on poll victory and later launched an unending agitation blaming the same Prime Minister for rigging the polls. Whether the elected government in Pakistan is in control of the country or not, should not have been India's problem. The irony is that it has become one. Hardliners in the establishment and outside it in Pakistan have ensured that peace process does not move forward an inch between the two countries. It is time New Delhi understood the message from Islamabad which is loud and clear. Well, if you get slapped on the left side of your face and present the right side hoping that the neighbour like Pakistan will not slap you again, you are making a grave mistake. The only problem with the new government in New Delhi is whether the foreign and defence policy advisors of Modi tell him to meet force with force or be prepared to get doubly slapped. |
