Despite austerity appeals, Eid shoppers throng markets in North Kashmir | | | Syed Tahir Bukhari
BARAMULLA, Oct 5: Despite appeals for austerity by religious and social groups, markets were abuzz with eid shoppers in north Kashmir's Baramulla district. Eatables including mutton, poultry, eggs and festive merchandise like firecrackers and toys for children, garments for families and other items were in great demand. Eyewitnesses told Early Times that, despite a public holiday, the Jammu and Kashmir Bank kept all its branches open in the state so that customers could withdraw money and transact businesses not normally possible through ATM cards. However Eid-Ul Azha will be celebrated on Monday as Muslims will do the sacrifice animals mostly sheep and at some places camels as well for three days to commemorate the sacrifice offered by Prophet Ibrahiem (AS). Mehraj Ud Din of Delina who came to Baramulla for Eid shopping told Early Times that these Eid days comes handy for greedy traders in Kashmir especially in North Kashmir. Mutton, poultry, eggs, bakery and garments are usually the items where availability on Eid is generally believed to be more important than fair prices."I saw people literally hanging with mutton shops right from the morning till evening in the town to buy mutton while nobody has kept the flood victims of valley in mind he said. He added and said that, "The mutton sellers were sitting like monarchs across their chopping blocks. Bakery sellers are passing on loads of bakery to buyers who have no time to check goods before they part with their money. Not only these traders, unfortunately everyone who so ever it is, even though traffic police has not left unchecked without taking Eidyana, which shows the gravity of corruption, injustice and what not, said a local visitor Abdul Rashid Dar. He alleged that ,In such a situation, the oft-repeated claims of the state government that market checking squads have been deployed to keep prices with reasonable limits is widely seen an insult to the system in which we are living here in Kashmir. Irony is that I along with my media friends were in the market from 9 am till 4:20 pm I saw everyone was busy in his shopping even though nobody dared to say anything to these ill traders. I moved everywhere in the town. I didn't find any official, who might have been from checking squad in and around the market. |
