Jammu, Oct 5: On the eve of Eid-ul-Adha people in flood hit Srinagar are abstaining from Sacrifices, resulting in lowest ever business for animal dealers of Jammu and Kashmir. Animal dealers of Kashmir and parts of Rajouri District who used to earn lakhs of rupees on the eve of Eid-Ul-Azha by selling sacrificial animals to people are only sending back sacrificial animals back in grazing fields and Parks this year following the recession in markets of Kashmir. "Floods turned everything upside down in kashmir, including our Business. This year we went only twice to Residency Road Srinagar but could not sell a single goat or sheep" said Muhammad Iqbal Ganai, one Animal dealer of Pulwama. "We would sell around 500 to 2000 sheep and goats at different places of Kashmir ahead of Eid" he added. Animal dealers said that people of Kashmir be it is flood affected areas like Srinagar, Pulwama, Kulgam, Anantnag or usually considered economically sound Shopian District, people are not in a position to even buy cheaper animals contrary to previous years when one person would sometimes buy two heavy weight sacrificial animals instead of one and would not bargain too much.
"Previously, we would supply thousands of Sheep to our dealers based in different parts of kashmir before Eid, but I think flood has really reduced the economic strength of people of kashmir" Said another animal dealer Sultan Khata of Darhal Rajouri. Animal dealers said that not many animal dealers who used to reach Kashmir from different parts of the state around 10 days before Eid-ul-Azah changed their plans this year, but they were disappointed this year due to floods siphoning off purchasing power of common Kashmiris.
Traditionally, Kashmir would see separate markets created by government for sale and Purchase of Sacrificial animals across the state on the eve of Eid-Ul-Azha, but this year neither Markets have been created, nor people are buying sacrificial animals as previous years.
