Anti-rabies serum goes missing from GMCH, Healthy ministry unlikely to procure | | | Sumit Sharma
JAMMU, Oct 26: Non-seriousness on the part of Health Ministry of the state is proving detrimental for patients suffering with the animals bites as despite number of reminders, health ministry has failed to provide Anti-Rabies Serum (ARS) to Government Medical College Hospital (GMCH) Jammu. Principal Government Medical College Hospital (GMCH) Jammu, Dr. Ghanshyam in its letter to the government said, "GMCH has no cure to patients with animal bites particularly dog and monkey. GMCH is without anti-rabies serum (ARS). The same should be procured as soon as possible". After the letter, the hospital authorities wrote number of times to government but all went in vain. The hospital authorities took up issue following increasing number of the animal bite cases as apprised by H.O.D Preventive and Social Medicine Department, Dr Danesh. Astonishingly, the ARS is hardly made available in the open market leaving the patients at the mercy of God. Acting Drugs Controller Suresh Kumar, when contacted admitted shortage of the ARS in the market. He added that National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority in its notification clipped manufacturing company of ARS by fixing the prices of the drugs, resulting they failed to manufacture the ARS. However, he further assured that to come up with the crises he will put up the matter in a meeting being held shortly. Further, with the minimum availability the prices, ARS rises high ranging from 2600 to onwards per vial. Pertinently, the anti-rabies serum needed to treat animal bite cases categorised as Class III, was being procured by the purchase committee of GMC&H. But for the last many years hospital administration stopped to procure the ARS. The rabies vaccine, which is used for Class I and Class II category bites, is available in the hospital but whenever it comes for critical bites, the required ARS is out of stock for the patients. And what is the worst here that on average, 20-25 cases of animal bites including dog are reported every day at the GMC&H and 70 percent of the cases are said to be critical where ARS is needed. |
