ANANTNAG, Oct 26: Model village 'Khiram' and its adjacent villages in Bijbehara area of Anantnag district are facing acute shortage of drinking water owing to slow restoration work on the damaged multi-crore water supply scheme.
According to residents, Rs. 14 crore 'Regional water supply scheme' suffered minor damage on September 4 this year due to flash floods in Nowshera village.
They alleged that influential employees of the department are deliberately delaying restoration of water supply scheme resulting in acute shortage of drinking water in the area.
"From last over 7 weeks we are visiting officials of the PHE department but they continue to ignore our plight, "resident of Village Khiram told Early Times. They accused PHE official Ali Mohammad who is supervising restoration work, for the slow pace of restoration work on the damaged water supply scheme.
"He (Ali Mohammad PHE official) is earning out of it, department claims that they are restoring the damaged pipeline but on ground nothing is happening since he is working at an extremely slow pace," locals alleged.
However, officials of the PHE department claim that water supply will be restored within a week.
"Pipeline of the water supply scheme which lay on difficult terrain has suffered damage.
We are working on it and hopefully, we will restore the water supply scheme in a week's time," R.K.Pandita, Executive Engineer of PHE department said. He said that pipelines have suffered damage due to illegal mining in Nowshera, where the department is trying to lay the pipeline on pillars now.
"The same people who were facing acute shortage of drinking water have resorted to illegal mining due to which the water supply scheme suffered damage, now we constructed pillars for the pipeline which took time."
He added. Earlier resident of Model Village Khiram has demanded vigilance into the alleged failure of water supply scheme which was meant for five villages but is providing drinking water facility to only two villages. They have accused the PHE officials, engineers and Local MLA of changing the alignment of the pipeline of multi-crore Regional water supply scheme.
