srinagar, Nov 3: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah might have given an impression that he had decided two years back that he would not be contesting 2014 Assembly elections from Ganderbal, but the truth of matter is that his one of the trusted lieutenants spoiled the party for him.
Few months back Omar's close friend and the National Conference's provincial president for Kashmir, Nasir Aslam Wani shut the doors for Omar from Ganderbal constituency following his belligerence during a party rally. Nasir kicked some of the party supporters when they demanded that mandate from Ganderbal should be given to Ishfaq Jabbar.
Up to the holding of this party rally no decision had been taken with respect to the mandate from the Ganderbal constituency. Following the aggressive nature of NC's provincial president the supporters of Ishfaq made it a point that their 'favourite' gets the mandate from the constituency. Their firm 'resolve' made the going tough for Omar and his coterie.
Ganderbal has always been very important for the Abdullah family and they have represented the constituency since 1975 except for one occasion. Omar's grandfather Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah and father Dr. Farooq Abdullah won their elections from the Ganderbal constituency. On his part Omar lost from Ganderbal in 2002 to Qazi Mohammad Afzal of Peoples Democratic Party, but avenged his defeat six years later in 2008.
Omar's reluctance to contest from Ganderbal was also due to the fact that some of his former party men are trying their luck during these elections. Once a National Conference loyalist, Sheikh Ghulam Ahmad Saloora is fighting the elections as an independent candidate, while as yet another NC staunch loyalist Mohammad Yousuf Bhat is trying his luck on Congress ticket.
There is a general perception among the people more so of the Ganderbal district that Omar as MLA failed to solve the problems of people of this central Kashmir district. The people say that Omar has nothing to sell for seeking reelection from this constituency and this reason too led to a situation where Omar had to say goodbye to Ganderbal.
Since the NC votes are all set to be fragmented among the party candidate and the former party men it is quite possible that Ganderbal may yet again see the election of a non-National Conference man. If that happens then this surely would be one of the biggest setbacks for the party in the upcoming Assembly elections. But one thing is for sure that no person from the Sheikh family would be elected from Ganderbal this time around.
National Conference's decision to field Omar from two constituencies is due to the reason that they are not sure whether he will win from one of the seats where he is contesting elections. The NC leaders believe that Omar would be successful from one of the constituencies even though he loses from the other constituency. This they believe would embarrass them less as compared to the situation where Omar loses from the only constituency where he fights the elections.
