JAMMU, Nov 3: With new State Government to be sworn in Jammu and Kashmir by the year end, it would be interesting to see if the new dispensation shall undo the wrongs done by the NC-Congress coalition Government during the last six years or at least bring out what was swept below the carpet all this while.
New Governments instituted in states of Haryana and Maharashtra recently have reiterated their resolve to reopen cases of corruption, nepotism and impropriety by the previous Governments to bring out truth before the people, and if new Government in Jammu and Kashmir goes by the same spirit, it shall have its work cut out.
The six year tenure of the coalition Government was marked by several controversies, many of which were either swept below the carpet, or the manner in which they were settled, raised more questions than it answered.
Political watchers believe that if the PDP came to power, it would definitely want to get the mysterious killing of Haji Yousuf are investigated. Though Commission constituted by the coalition Government had absolved Chief Minister of any misdoing in the case, the more important aspect of the case, the allegations of political corruption were never probed. It is pertinent to mention here that the deceased had accused NC leadership of putting LC membership on sale for huge cost.
The scam worth crores of rupees in the Jammu Kashmir Cricket Association (JKCA) that rocked the state Assembly and directly targeted senior Abdullah is still under investigation and police are yet to file a challan in the case. It is alleged that the National Conference was in dock over the case as the investigation agency had indicted the President JKCA, Dr. Farooq Abdullah in misappropriation of funds.
The open loot in the name of transfers and postings in departments of School and Higher Education carried on for a long time, but Chief Minister Omar Abdullah preferred silence even as media reports were abuzz with misdoings of a PRO of the Dy Chief Minister. Interestingly, the PRO recently turned hostile and leveled charges of murder and rape against the Dy CM, but the CM did not break his silence still. New Government would be duty bound to bring out the truth of these allegations before the people.
Besides, Coalition Government was accused of systematic decimation of accountability institutions, open patronage to the corrupt officers and rewarding indicted officers with prime postings and new Government that comes to power after the results of the ensuing Assembly elections are announced on December 23, would be morally committed to bring out the truth before the people to restore their trust in the democratically elected Governments.
