Would BJP make abrogation of Article 370 its poll plank? | Assembly Elections | | ET Report JAMMU, Nov 3: Bharatiya Janta Party is likely to mention in its election manifesto that if it forms the next Government in Jammu and Kashmir it would abrogate the Article 370, which gives special status to JK, from the state. Sources said that top BJP leadership is of the opinion that party should clearly mention its stand in the manifesto rather than beating around the bush. "We had clearly mentioned in our party manifesto ahead of the 2014 Parliamentary polls that if BJP comes into power in the centre it would abrogate the Article 370. Why should we no mention it in our manifesto for the Assembly elections," a few BJP leaders are understood to have opined. Sources said the BJP leaders are of the opinion that making abrogation of the Article 370 as the poll plank would help the party in the Jammu region and would have great hit the already battered Congress in Jammu. "Congress leaders cannot rake up the issue of the Article 370 as they cannot annoy their friends in Kashmir, but BJP leaders can easily raise this issue in Jammu as most Jammuites are in the favour of the revocation of the Art 370," sources added. They said that people of Jammu believe that if Article 370 is revoked it would help them in boasting their economy as the people from the neighboring states can come forward and invest without any fear. "Article 370 is a big stumbling block for the people of Jammu and it should be abrogated forthwith," the BJP leaders are understood to have deliberated upon. Pertinently, Minister of State in the Prime Minister's Office Dr Jitendra Singh soon after taking over his new assignment had made it clear that deliberations are on to revoke the Article 370 from JK. His assertion had triggered a debate in Jammu and Kashmir with Valley based parties claiming that they would go to any extent to prevent the BJP from succeeding in doing so. An analyst while talking to Early Times said that Kashmir based parties by raising the bogey of the Article 370 hoodwink Kashmiris. "They have been taking people for a ride by claiming that Art 370 is a sacred document and it cannot be touched. However, the fact is that Jammu and Kashmir has suffered extensively due to this Article being in vogue. It has prevented the state from getting fully integrated with the country and due to Art 370 state has been deprived of benefits reaching to the other states," the analyst added. He claimed that Kashmir based politicians swear by Article 370 for their vested interests. "Even Kashmiri people have understood their designs and have no faith in them." The analyst said that an open debate should be held on Article 370. " Kashmir based politicians know it very well that if a debate is held they would stand exposed as this Article has more disadvantages than benefits,' he added. If the BJP mentions abrogation of the Article 370 in its election manifesto it would definitely trigger a debate in Jammu and Kashmir and would also expose the double standards of the Kashmir based politicians. |
