Early Times Report

JAMMU, Dec 2: The BJP, which discarded its ideology very recently to garner some Muslim votes in Kashmir, on Monday went a step further to promote its vote-bank politics in the Valley. Releasing the Vision Document at Srinagar, state BJP vice-president Ramesh Arora, declared that if voted to power the BJP would withdraw "stringent" Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA). Under this Act, the Armed forces involved in combating terrorism in Jammu & Kashmir enjoy legal immunity. It was clear that he was asked by the party leadership to make a statement that the BJP shared the view of anti-national forces in the Valley that AFSPA was an undesirable Act and that it needed to be withdrawn. Arora is not that big leader in the BJP that he could make a policy statement on his own. Obviously, it is the party high command which directed him to condemn the AFSPA in Kashmir for vote-bank politics. All Kashmiri "mainstream" leaders and all separatists had been opposing the AFSPA since years, saying that it was a "draconian" legislation and that the "Army had exploited this legislation to violate human rights of the Kashmiri people". On the other hand, the Army Commanders had always held the view that the withdrawal of the AFSPA will hamper their anti-insurgency operations. The latest statement of the BJP on the AFSPA must have disturbed the Army Commanders. The statement of Arora has also not gone down well with the people of Jammu province. They have described the statement on AFSPA as "the most deplorable attempt on the part of the BJP to get a few votes in Kashmir". "The BJP is playing with the country's interests for a few votes. It is worse than the Congress. It would be a black day if the BJP forms government in the state," the critics of the BJP said while reacting to the BJP's statement on the AFSPA. The point is that the politically awakened sections have turned against the BJP and are accusing the BJP leadership of "sacrificing national interest".
