JAMMU, Dec 2: By blatantly refusing to perform election duties, Teachers of Jammu University have disregarded the statutory provisions which invite reprimand under law and the Jammu University Teachers Association (JUTA) has further aggravated the wrongdoing by threatening a stir if any action was taken against the defaulting teachers.
JU teachers had refused to perform election duties advocating their 'pressing' engagements while many in the university confess that many senior professors do not take even their assigned classes let alone research work for which they are paid hefty salaries. Moreover, while the teachers are trying to hide behind the autonomous status of the university, insiders divulge that the JU is a state university wherein State Government service rules are applicable. "Wherever University does to have its own statutes, State Government's service rules are applicable in the state funded universities as ours" said a senior officer of the University pleading anonymity.
Due to increase in number of polling booths in almost all the constituencies, increase in number of polling staff has been necessitated and Election Commission has deputed staff from various PSUs for election duties besides the regular Government servants, which they have undertaken unlike the JU teachers, who have chosen to go on war path with the election authorities firstly by offering silly excuses and then threatening to boycott work.
It is pertinent to mention here that there were certain discrepancies in the list sent by the election authorities seeking deputation of teachers for the election duties, but university authorities rather than eradicating the anomalies and directing the teachers to take up the deputations as directed by the election authorities have tried to shield the defaulting teachers.
"The incumbent VC, Prof. RD Sharma is finding himself in a fix as his appointment as interim VC was supported by JUTA and the association is now seeking support in reciprocation from the VC in the unlawful stand taken by them" said another senior officer of JU. Meanwhile, it has been reliably learnt that both Government and the election authorities have taken a serious view of the open dissent shown by the university teachers and incapability of the VC to act against them.
